At present, the main packaging protection materials for household appliances are EPS, EPO, pulp molding, etc.,
And EPS protection materials are mainly used in the household appliance industry, but EPS has poor impact resistance, and is easy to produce debris after external force, which is easy to cause white pollution and cannot be recycled;
EPO material is made of 70% polystyrene and 30% polyethylene, which has higher impact resistance than EPS, but the cost is higher, and because EPO is a blended material, it is not easy to recycle;Pulp molding materials have a wide range of sources, easy to recycle, and low cost, but the material itself has the shortcomings of unstable quality, rough surface, easy moisture absorption and decay, etc., and is not suitable for packaging protection of large household appliances.
As a high-performance cushioning material, EPP material has good strength, toughness and flexible strength properties, mainly used in precision instrument packaging, automotive industry, children’s toys and other fields, because its cost and processing cost are higher than EPS, so EPP material has not been widely used in the home appliance packaging industry.
The tensile properties, compressive properties and recovery properties of EPP materials and EPS have been compared, and the actual transportation and loading and unloading processes of products have been simulated to verify the comprehensive properties of EPP buffer materials, and the main conclusions are as follows:
a)Under the same density, the tensile strength of EPP material is better than that of EPS material, and the compressive strength is close to EPS, which is very suitable for packaging protection of large household appliances such as refrigerators, and has the basis of recycling;
b)In the process of transportation of large household appliances, it is easy to cause stress concentration, and the compression recovery performance of EPP is much better than that of EPS, and the resilience is better, and the collapse of the bubble hole will not easily lead to protection failure, which proves that EPP material can provide long-term protection effect for household appliances.
c)EPP material can be reused many times, and the durability is much higher than that of EPS material.

To sum up, the expanded polypropylene (EPP) material has good compressive strength, mechanical properties, excellent recovery, the tensile strength of EPP material is higher than EPS at the same density, the compressive strength is close to EPS material, and the durability of the workpiece is better than EPS, therefore, EPP material has a wide application prospect and great potential in the packaging industry, and can be recycled in the packaging of household appliances.
